The power of Mayors in shaping sustainable cities
This week the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan got elected for a rare third term. A big victory for the guy who is committed to a sustainable and livable city. I am constantly inspired by the innovative leadership Mayors show in major cities around the world. I’m a true believer that change starts in cities worldwide. As Benjamin Barber stated in ‘If Mayors Ruled the World’, cities can probably solve big challenges better than nations. That makes Mayors having a crucial position. The commitment of the mayors of Paris and London to create more livable, less car-dependent cities has been particularly influential. Here in Bangkok, Governor Chadchart Sittipunt’s progressive policies are setting a similar stage for sustainable urban development.
Visionary urban strategies
Paris's Mayor Anne Hidalgo has been a pioneer with the"15-minute city" concept, which envisions a city where all residents can meet their essential needs within a fifteen-minute walk or bike ride from their homes. This approach aims to improve quality of life by reducing car dependency and promoting neighborhood and community cohesion. Important part of this vision are transformative initiatives, such as reclaiming streets for pedestrians and cyclists. She took a big risk with her bold approach, but it pays off.
Similarly, London’s Mayor Sadiq Khan has focused on reducing pollution and traffic through the expansion of the Ultra Low Emission Zone(ULEZ) and investments in public transport and cycling infrastructure. These measures are part of creating a healthier and more accessible city.
Bangkok’s progressive urban vision under Governor Chadchart
After his election as the Governor of Bangkok, Chadchart Sittipunt launched an ambitious program to make Bangkok a "livable city for everyone." His campaign includes 214 policies covering a broad spectrum of urban challenges, from improving public safety and transport to enhancing health services and environmental sustainability.
Governor Chadchart's approach emphasizes inclusivity, participation, and technological innovation. He is actively engaged with the community through social media and other platforms, encouraging public involvement in governance. His administration is noted for its transparency and responsiveness.

The examples set by the Mayors of Paris, London, and Bangkok shows the impact of determined leadership in urban transformation.
