The power of long-term vision in urban development

With a background in coordinating long-term visions for a dozen municipalities in The Netherlands, as the founder of UrbanSphere Solutions and a dedicated sustainable urbanist based in Bangkok, I've encountered a lot of urban challenges. From air pollution and traffic congestion to the lack of green spaces and housing issues, those complex challenges demand integrated solutions. Especially in the dynamic landscape of urban living, long-term vision for municipalities, cities, towns, and neighborhoods could be extremely valuable. Let’s answer the question: what city, town or neighborhood do you want to be at the end? And from that starting point we can abstract what to to do tomorrow to go on that path to the future.

The importance of long-term visions

In Thailand, as in many ASEAN cities, urban planning often focuses on short-term gains. Very understandable but it’s mostly leading to fragmented infrastructure and missed opportunities for more holistic development. There are absolutely strategies and long-term goals, but it lacks vision mostly. Embracing a long-term vision can revolutionize urban development, fostering sustainability and resilience while addressing pressing issues like traffic congestion, pollution, housing and insufficient greenspaces.

Integrated approach to urban challenges

Drawing from my experience coordinating long-term visions in The Netherlands, I advocate for a comprehensive approach to urban challenges. By engaging stakeholders from various sectors, including local communities, government agencies, private enterprises and the academic world, we cultivate an environment where innovative solutions thrive.

Breaking down silos

The interconnected nature of urban challenges makes clear that breaking down silos between departments and agencies is necessary. Transportation, housing, environment, and social equity are not isolated issues but interconnected aspects of urban life. A holistic approach is essential to address these challenges effectively.

Community engagement in visioning

Empowering communities to participate in the visioning process is key. Residents hold invaluable insights into their neighborhoods and must be involved in shaping their future. Through participatory workshops and digital platforms, we ensure that the vision reflects the diverse needs and aspirations of the community.

Turning vision into action

Creating a long-term vision is only the first step. Translating it into tangible action requires a concrete plan with clear goals and accountability mechanisms. By setting ambitious but achievable targets, we mobilize resources and track progress towards a more sustainable future. With concrete actions to start with tomorrow we make it happen.

Conclusion

While long-term visions may not be common, they are essential for sustainable urban development. By embracing visionary thinking, we can overcome urban challenges and create vibrant, resilient communities. Let's envision cities, towns and neighborhoods where sustainability, equity, and prosperity thrive, building a brighter future for Thai cities and beyond.
